Why Small Cap?

Small Cap stocks since early 2008, were the first to be sold during the sub prime and economic crisis. Many stocks are trading far below their net cash position, meaning that you can buy a dollar in their treasuries for pennies on that dollar. Typically, small cap stocks are the first to bounce back and history shows us that they lead the way for years to come following depressions, recessions and stock market crashes. In the year following the end of each of the past 10 recessions, small cap stocks rose an average of 28 percent compared to 19 percent for large cap stocks.

Other reasons for our bullish view on small cap stocks:

  1. 1.Lack of Analyst Coverage
During times of a weakening economy this can actually be a good thing. Investors are not hanging on every bit of financial news and guidance from analysts causing stocks to trade down on the slightest failure to exceed expected quarterly and annual performance.

  2. 2.Lack of Debt
Small caps often are financed through equity and usually have more conservative debt to equity ratios as their business is inherently more risky. During the credit crunch this has been a life saver for many small companies. The good ones haven’t had to try to restructure debt and credit obligations during a time where little to no credit was available.

  3. 3.They are Nimble
Small companies are able to act more quickly to reel in expenses and change their business strategy during periods of economic uncertainty. They have less less red tape and layers of management to go through to implement change.

  4. 4.Less Exposure to the US Consumer
Small cap stocks have far less exposure to the over-extended and tired US consumer. Large cap stocks have for the last quarter century relied on the consumer to drive their sales and share price growth. This has come to a crashing halt and may never ever be the same again. Small cap stocks do more B2B and have more modest sales targets. The best time to capture market share could be now!

  5. 5.Less Diversified
Yes, you read it correctly, small cap stocks in North America are less diversified and many of them are involved in the exploration and development of materials, energy and technology. All great spaces to be in right now with low share prices, low commodity and energy prices and pent up demand for new technology in the automotive and energy production sectors. Small caps are going to lead this recovery.
